57 gay weddings a day blows away UK Government estimates

The Office for National Statistics has today released the provisional figures for the numbers of civil partnerships taking place in the UK.

The figures show that a total of 15,672 civil partnerships have been formed between December 2005 and September 2006, averaging 57 gay weddings a day.

This means that 5 times more gay weddings are taking place than the Government estimates of 22,000 by 2010.

The Government estimated the number of Civil Partnerships after various consultations before the law was implemented.

90% of all civil partnerships were formed in England, 6% in Scotland, 3% in Wales and 1% in Northern Ireland.

There are still more male partnerships formed than female partnerships, with the split being 61% to 39% across the UK.

The Office for National Statistics website has full details of the figures together with further interesting interpretations of the data. However there is no breakdown of the figures by individual area, only by broad region.

Responsibility for the production and release of statistics has passed from the General Register Office to the Office for National Statistics.

Inspiration for pogoplum.com

In January 2005, during initial contact with Leeds Castle in Kent, Christina, and her wife Liz were intrigued to find the staff were somewhat reticent about hosting a gay wedding, which the couple were planning for December 2005 as the new Civil Partnership Act came into force. Asserting their desire for the perfect day, a visit to the Castle to meet the team was needed to eliminate their fears. The wedding was a dream. But for the 11 months of planning the event, finding other products and services proved challenging, with good quality information and advice being near impossible.
